Meet the Human

Samantha and James discovered beekeeping by chance, when a friend suggested they try it for a summer on a farm in central Minnesota. Finding themselves with a passion they never dreamed off, they dove in head-first! Now, they run a family farm in Iola, Wisconsin, accompanied by their little one and Kat the parrot (the bird in "Bird and the Bees").

Why We Love This

These really are some busy bees: Samantha and James actually pack up their hives and travel with them to California each winter, where the bees pollinate warm-weather orchards before returning to the family farm in Iola, WI for summer honey production. It takes so much effort and risk to produce a small amount of honey, making it a true labor of love and a special gift. Because honey tastes different depending on what the bees eat, the end product is a hyper-local reflection of our region's landscape. . --Gigi

This 6 oz jar of honey, produced in Iola, Wisconsin, makes a fantastic gift - pair with tea or a loaf of local bread!

From the apiary:

"This honey is our strongest flavor and is mostly buckwheat but has some clover as well which makes this a more mild buckwheat. True Buckwheat is almost black in color. This buckwheat has a malty almost chocolate or molasses flavor and is really lovely in baked goods. It has a pleasant medium crystal structure which makes it really nice by the spoonful. I find this to be a nice starter buckwheat since pure buckwheat can be almost bitter and pungent. Melted this buckwheat is more the color of chocolate."
