Zak Fellman is a Winona, Minnesota-based artist and designer working across printmaking, painting, letterpress, and object design. He started HVRNT Studio in 2015 as a home for his independent art practice and the many creative rabbit holes he finds himself going down.
Zak's creative life extends well beyond HVRNT: he's also the co-founder and creative lead of Pillbox Bat Company and a co-founder of Sanborn Canoe Company. I love the curiosity that runs through all of his work, and the way he moves between fine art, traditional craft, and functional objects without treating them as separate worlds.
Why We Love This
Why We Love This
I love art that makes you look more closely at something you've seen a million times. Every tree has its own weird little geography hidden inside it, and Zak's prints put all those irregular rings, cracks, knots, and wonky edges front and center. They're striking from across the room, but even better when you get up close.--Gigi
Zak Fellman of HVRNT Studio takes sections of fallen trees, inks them up like printing plates, and pulls one-of-a-kind rubbing-style prints. The resulting forms are, in addition to beautiful minimalist art, records of growth and resilience that often span over a century.
This print is part of a limited run of 44 hand-pulled woodcut relief prints pulled directly from a section of a downed cedar tree. These prints are hand-pulled rubbings and will have slight variations. Each is signed on the front and numbered, signed and dated on the back.
