Imaginary Authors is the Portland-based fragrance house of perfumer Josh Meyer, who founded the line around the idea of scent as storytelling. Each fragrance is built like a fictional book, complete with invented authors, imagined settings, and elaborate backstories. The result feels more like collecting tiny art objects than traditional perfume.

Josh develops the fragrances himself using a mix of natural and synthetic materials sourced from around the world, creating scents that are often atmospheric, unusual, and surprisingly transportive. Even the names feel cinematic: Falling Into the Sea, Every Storm a Serenade, Memoirs of a Trespasser.

I love how approachable Imaginary Authors makes fragrance feel. The scents are layered and interesting without feeling intimidating, and the travel sizes are a great way to explore a few different favorites without committing to a full bottle.

The packaging is also incredibly beautiful. Each fragrance comes in a tiny book-inspired box with its own artwork and story, which makes these especially lovely to gift.
