Why We Love This

These earrings carry a meaningful, important story, yet still feel highly wearable. They’re an example of my very favorite kind of art, where beauty and concept aren’t enemies, but friends.

—Gigi

From the artist:

As part of Trecy Bleich's Rice Collection, the Rice Stack earrings are structurally hand beaded in a triangle form representing stacks of rice. They are very light weight. This collection was created to honor and beautify the souls of women who were migrated to America involuntarily from West Africa during the 17th and 18th century transatlantic slave trade specifically for their knowledge to cultivate rice for the American south's economic growth. Colors for the collection are blue, for the water used to grow rice. Green, for the rice plant and black, for the enslaved people who performed the work.

Featured in Harper's Bazaar Fall 2023, sold at Guggenheim museum in support of the Going Dark exhibition, EmpowerHer exhibition for Fulton county Atlanta Arts and Culture Women's history month 2023 and in London, UK for the Cluster Contemporary Jewelry exhibit.
